“Authentic Self” is one of the few self-portraits created that encompasses mixed media. Champion incorporates Ankara fabric, which was donated by her mentor, Frank Frazier, recycled jewelry, and acrylic painting. The title is symbolic of how the artist feels when she wears Nigerian or Ghanian inspired fashion or attire. Wearing the beautiful gowns and gele not only ties into the cultural beauty of the fabric, but the story and history behind it. Champion wants to inspire and motivate her audience by being conscious of what helps them to feel authentic; perhaps it could it start with going back to one’s ancestral roots.
