“A Side of Me” is self-portrait created with mixed media. In terms of mixed media, Champion chose to use Ankara fabric, acrylic paint, and recycled jewelry to create the artwork. To represent her African roots, the artist selected to use Ankara fabric for the background. The choice of using the fabric is to remind herself and to inform her viewers that she honors and highlights her ancestral ties into her art. Implementing recycled jewelry into the painting is to purposely show the beauty of sustainable materials and Champion’s joy for fashion. The goal of her art is to inspire the audience to celebrate their culture and to embrace their individuality.
